SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
RULES AND GUIDELINES

OBJECTIVES:  To provide financial assistance to qualifying high school seniors for reduction of necessary costs tuition at a recognized college or university, while creating an awareness among young people of labor history and the labor movement, and aiding the Local union in promoting positive public perception of employee organizations.

SCHOLARSHIP: One $4,000 scholarship will be awarded each year in increments of $1,000, for a total of four, 4-year scholarships. 

ELIGIBILITY:  Only high school seniors who are children of Local union members in good standing may apply.

QUALIFICATIONS: The applicant must be attending high school or other corresponding secondary school. Applicants must take the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) or the American College Test (ACT).  Scores of tests must be submitted along with secondary school records and personal qualifications when application is made.

RESTRICTIONS: The scholarship must be used towards pursuing an undergraduate degree. If the winner fails to attend college the award will be canceled.  Additionally, the union may discontinue this program at any time without obligation.  Any increment of an award already paid will be honored. The award will be deposited with the school's financial aid office when the recipient notifies the union of his/her registration. Parents of the scholarship recipient must remain in good standing with the union for the length of the award or any remaining increments of the award not paid will be canceled.

SELECTION PROCESS: An applicant must complete a form provided by the union which may be mailed, faxed, or submitted on the Local's web-page, by the specified deadline. Applicants must submit a written essay of no more than 500 words on a "labor related subject".  The essay must accompany the application. Qualifying entries will be judged on the basis of scholastic achievement including SAT and/or ACT scores, and the submitted essay. Applications must be sent to: Secretary-Treasurer, GFAL-APWU, P. O. Box 1, Greensburg, Pa. 15601, and be post-marked, faxed, or e-mailed by April 1st, of each year.
